About Intrauterine insemination:
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) or called Artificial Insemination, is a procedure that introduces sperms directly into the woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation. The sperms or semen sample are collected from the husband. Since the procedure bypasses the cervix, it shortens the path for the sperm to slide through fallopian tubes, and make their way to the egg, fertilize, and cause a pregnancy.
When IUI is Recommended?
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an option for individuals or couples who have, reduced sperm motility, problems with sperm delivery (e.g. blockages or structural defects), and/or unexplained infertility.
Advantages of Receiving Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
With IUI, the chance of becoming pregnant increases for several reasons. Some of them are:
The semen sample is carefully processed in the laboratory, which allows for only healthy sperms with the highest capability of fertilizing an egg are picked up.
Stimulation of the ovary, which involves inducing a hormone to stimulate the ovary to release mature egg(s).
The sperms are placed around the time of ovulation.
The procedure is administered with great control (over growth of eggs, selection of healthy sperms, and introduction and fertilization of the best eggs and sperms).

How is Intrauterine insemination (IUI) done?

The fertility procedure officially commences with ovarian stimulation, which seeks the development and maturation of an egg by using a stimulant.

This involves ultrasound scans (2 or 3) and blood tests to determine if the follicles have grown in the desired number and size. The results are followed by a dose of the hormone hCG which is administered to induce ovulation. 36 hours later, artificial insemination is scheduled.

On the day of the procedure, the husband is required to deliver a semen sample to the laboratory a couple of hours before the insemination. The embryologist selects sperms with better mobility and quality, to increase its capacity of fertilization.

While the candidate is laid down in bed, the fertility-expert gently introduces a semen sample through a catheter into the uterus, and allows the patient to rest for a few minutes.

After the successful insemination of sperms into the uterus, the patient is informed of the optimal date to perform the blood pregnancy test i.e. 14 or 15 days after the procedure. If the result comes out positive, an ultrasound is scheduled to confirm the embryo sac. The patient can then continue monitoring the pregnancy with a usual Gynecologist.
